As we all look toward a police-free world and prepare for reactionary pushback against this powerful international movement, we must avoid spreading fear the way cops do. That is their weapon. Ours is solidarity. Ours is calm. Ours is truth. Ours is community.
We write so that the impunity enjoyed by the known criminals doesn’t pass without witnesses and testimonies. As for those silent about, or complicit with, the criminals: to despise them is most likely what helps us keep going.
All the analysis of the violence in the world seems to occur with the complete removal of human activity. It seems to exist purely as a form of speaking over people, a game of chess with no pieces, a world with nobody in it but foreign policy experts and talking heads.
Rural voters are being stoked to feel anger and outrage at a mythical coastal elite exploiting them and enforcing federal regulations on them. They’re being told by rightwing media that this is all some kind of conspiracy.
The Thanksgiving myth makes light of Indigenous people’s very real historical traumas. It depicts the only authentic Indians as frozen in time at the moment of contact. It blinds Americans to the existence of Native people in modern times and to the ways Native people have resisted the colonial apocalypse for centuries.
It is critical to understand that the “Russiagate” hoax narrative is Trump’s narrative. By insisting for over two years that Russian interference was overblown, “left” skeptics have been defending the worst president in US history.
Right now we’re seeing increasing division and fear defining our politics. We can find another political narrative that re-frames that relationship. We may already be on our way, but it’s clearly not an easy task.
Anti-imperialists may believe they are on the right side of history. But history has already shown the results of opposing a liberal order through red-brown populist collaboration.
There is now a political constituency being crafted at the highest level that has fear as a motivating factor. Once the limits are taken off, we end up in this Mad Max world where whatever is politically profitable will be used, no matter how destructive it is.
